Its just “Depression” right? – Educate yourself please.

Hi guys so today I decided to really just write this post on something that its more on a personal point and not so much on fashion or music, though it is related to one of the most recent and latest entertainment news on the loss of Robin Williams. This post is about raising awareness and understanding an illness like depression and how it could lead to serious choices. These type of things I really don’t like really talking about often but I think that is the same reason why it keeps happening. Because people keep ignoring depression and mental illnesses and passing along the lines of being dramatic, crazy, you don’t what you’re talking about. But it really is way more than that its not a lifestyle that you choose its something that really does affect you emotionally, physically, and that is when things get real and scary. I think society is definitely a big influence on these type of things too but I’ll get into that later as we go on.

depression

As most of you should know by now it is believed that Williams’s death was because he apparently committed suicide following from a severe depression. I am not here to judge anyone’s choices or what they do with their life but it is so sad to see someone so beautiful, kind, talented, and joyful go in such a horrible way because of an illness that is so cruel to many.  We have seen a lot of Hollywood stars sadly commit suicide in many different ways, we have also heard of those who also struggle with substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, and mental illnesses. From Heath Ledger, Amy Winehouse, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and so many more. But is not only celebrities that are the ones struggling but also people like you and i, individuals who live in the same neighborhood as you or in your school, church, at work, and so on.

I am so saddened to see so many people pointing fingers, judging, and commenting on how weak could that person be, or even bullying them after they are gone rather than trying to understand if this could have been prevented. I really don’t understand how many people are out there who still think that depression, mental illnesses, suicide, or any other disorders are a game. This is serious and the first way to prevent more of these tragedies are by trying to understand one another, with love, compassion, communication, and helping them out.

Did you know that 1 in 4 people suffer some sort of mental health problem.

Stop judging why someone is the way they are, the way they dressed, talk, look, appearance, or what they have or don’t have. You don’t know their story and everybody has one. So before you point fingers take a look at your own life. Not a lot of people are blessed to have half of the things you may have or etc so why not share the blessings that you do have with them. If you see someone down, angry, upset sometimes its good to give them their space but its also good to talk with them  or if you are the one feeling frustrated talk or write it out. When you hold things in it can really tear you apart even more. A good friend of mine told me draw, sing, compose, write, do whatever you want but let it out and its true. Use your talents or whatever makes you feel at peace like listening,or expressing it in music.

From a personal point I can definitely tell you that everyone at least once or twice in their lifetime they will go through a phase where they are depressed or think they have lost it all.  But you need to start counting your blessings and not your flaws. There are days you feel frustrated like you are losing your mind or sometimes everything you had planned don’t go right. But you have to let the down falls make you strong and pick yourself up.

I know its hard, I know its not easy and its the reason why I want people to understand that the people who go through an illness like this or have thoughts of taking their own lives they are not weak. It takes a really strong mind to say I want to end this I have no way out or even to think that those are the only choices left for them to have. They are not doing it for attention, or anything like that. If someone wanted to do it they would, no question asked. I am not encouraging any harm of actions at all. I am just saying its an illness that needs to be taken very seriously and before you comment or speak the words “selfish”, “weak”, “idiotic”, “dramatic” or “waste of talent” think about what if you or a loved one was the one with such illness. How would you feel? How it would affect you? Your loved ones? Your dreams?

Though, I will never understand why would someone be so selfish and so low to even be a bully to someone even after they have committed such tragedy. It really just comes to show that really the weak one’s are the one who sit behind a computer screen commenting/criticizing instead of educating themselves and thinking how they could make a difference on someone else’s life that is slowly fading. I am not here to preach but i do hope that whoever is reading this whether you are the weak one’s (bullies), the soul who is seeking for an answer, or the families and friends who can’t understand or get any consolation to this illness to give yourself a chance to educate yourself, to understand, to give yourself a chance and somehow cope with a situation like this.

There is a purpose in this life for all of us, YOU are the light within the darkness. If you want to see a difference in your life take it one step at a time and BREATHE. Don’t let the struggles of life and the negativity take the strong, happy, extraordinary, beautiful, dreamer, talented individual YOU ARE. Life is made out of struggles and if life was easy it wouldn’t be called life. I know it sounds cliche but its so true. It may be a bad day but not a bad life. Please if you feel like your drowning in thoughts open your heart and seek the goodness in it, communicate with someone that will listen to you (God? Beliefs? Family Members? Friends? Psychologists?) the options are never ending. If you need prayer or if you feel like you need to talk to someone I’m here too because I have been there one way or another. I myself have dealt with depression maybe not at the same level as some of you but everyone does I promise. You are NOT alone!

And on a final note I would like to end with this I really think people should really think and educate themselves before they speak. People should never need to made feel worse for suffering from something that its beyond their control. And people should never make the families feel bad either for having someone go through it either. Because at the end of the day we are all humans, we all make mistakes, we all need chances to figure out who we really are, we all live, and breath the same way we need to love one another and support each other. 🙂
